Jonathan Vilma and a number of his teammates stood near the door to the players’ parking lot as reporters filed into the New York Jets’ locker room Monday. After completing their meetings and film work, the Jets were eager to get home and put their disappointing 17-14 loss at Buffalo behind them. “A loss always lingers until you get going for the next week,” Vilma said.

Jets linebacker Cody Spencer was placed on the reserve-non-football illness list Tuesday, ending his season. Spencer, in his fourth NFL season and second with New York, played in the season opener against New England but was inactive the last three weeks. He first appeared on the team’s injury report last Wednesday with an undisclosed illness.

With all the notes he takes each week, Brad Smith must feel as though he’s back in school sometimes. He’s the New York Jets’ version of Mr. Everything: a guy who has lined up at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and played on special teams since being drafted last year. That adds up to a lot of extra study time.

David Barrett tried to forget the injuries that nagged him. The results on the field were constant reminders. The New York Jets cornerback struggled the past two seasons to be the player he once was, and opposing offenses noticed. Barrett was often a target of quarterbacks and injuries prevented him from performing up to his own standards.

While Brett Favre sets records and stunningly has the Green Bay Packers at the top of their conference, a bunch of other NFL teams are surprisingly heading the other way. Take the 2006 NFC champion Chicago Bears, whom Detroit beat 37-27 on Sunday. Or the supposedly powerful San Diego Chargers, who fell into the AFC West cellar with a 30-16 home less to Kansas City.

Trent Edwards did more than deliver the Buffalo Bills a much-needed victory at a time when his demoralized and banged-up team needed it most. The rookie third-round pick, making his first career start, took a big step in showing that he — and not J.P. Losman — might be the Bills’ quarterback of the future.
